Hi,

You are invited to our 2027 Art Travel preview evening.
Whether you want to just
come along and hear about what we do or you are interested in joining a future tour-
you are welcome.

 Our 2027 destinations include:

**Japan | Hobart for Dark Mofo | Milan, Turin and Brescia |  Whanganui | Nelson**

Joining me will be people who bring very different perspectives to the world of
art - Sue Gardiner, Co-Director of the Chartwell Collection; Claire Chamberlain,
art historian, curator and tour leader; as well as Peter and Julie Collis, our Japan
ceramics tour leaders.

Together we’ll share the ideas and discoveries shaping each tour, the experiences,
the places we’ve uncovered, and some of the thoughtful details that you won’t find
in an itinerary.

Because for me, Art Travel has always been about getting beneath the surface of
a place - seeing great art, certainly, but also hearing the stories behind it, meeting
the people who bring a creative community to life, and sharing those experiences
with a group of curious, like-minded travellers.

Whether you’ve travelled with us before or are discovering Art Travel for the first
time, come along and connect with us around our 2027 programme.

**Tuesday 20 October
6:30–8:00pmStudio One Toi Tū1 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, Auckland

RSVP to: [enquiry@arttravel.co.nz](https://arttravel.co.nz/2026/10/08/oct-26-tour-preview-evening/enquiry@arttravel.co.nz)

Get in touch with me if you have any questions. I’d be very happy to hear from you.

I hope you can join us.

# **TOKYO**

Our tour began and finished in Tokyo. We spent the first full day walking the streets
of Harajuku and Omotesando. From the pop culture of Takeshita Street and its petting
cafes, to the urban cool of Cat Street, the [Watarium](http://www.watarium.co.jp/en/exhibition/),
[Nanzuka Underground](https://nanzuka.com/en/), [Fergus McCaffrey Gallery](https://fergusmccaffrey.com/)
and Spiral  - we cover the gamut of contemporary art. Architecture on both a private
and public scale was everywhere.

Our second stay in Tokyo at the end of our tour was spent in Ginza. We started at
[Ginza Six](https://www.julianopie.com/exhibitions/2025/ginza-six), with its rooftop
and coffee, to [Kogei Kanazawa](https://www.ginzanokanazawa.jp/) and Whitestone
Gallery to the [Okuno Building](https://www.tokyoartbeat.com/en/venues/-/AC2E1DCC),
[Maison Hermes Le Forum](https://www.fondationdentreprisehermes.org/en/project/obol-le-forum),
and the architectual wonder of the Toda Building its contemporary galleries.

We spied the fashion icon [Hanae Mori](https://www.nact.jp/english/exhibition_special/2026/hanaemori/)
at the National Art Center in Roppongi as well as the galleries of Pyramide.

Tokyo is always a great place to start and finish a tour.

# **Adelaide Biennial**

Art Travel visited Adelaide for the first and was humbled by the people we encountered.
Thanks to Leigh Robb at the AGSA, the good folks at the Samstag, the amazing Nikki
at the equally amazing [JamFactory](https://www.jamfactory.com.au/). Of course the
good folks at [Hugo Michell](https://hugomichellgallery.com/) Gallery and artist
[Sera Waters](https://hugomichellgallery.com/collections/sera-waters).
Special thanks
to the collectors who opened their homes to us. We won't forget Adelaide in a hurry
and look forward to returning in the near future.

The [Adelaide Biennial](https://www.agsa.sa.gov.au/whats-on/adelaide-biennial-of-australian-art/)
curated by Ellie Buttrose was across several venues. Whilst mainly at the [Art Gallery of South Australia](https://www.agsa.sa.gov.au/),
a number of works were included across both floors of the [Samstag Museum](https://samstag.adelaide.edu.au/),
and a small number in the Botanic Gardens conservatory as well as Archie Moore's
work in the [Museum of Economic Botany](https://www.botanicgardens.sa.gov.au/visit/adelaide-botanic-garden/museum-of-economic-botany).

# **Biennale of Sydney and Mike Hewson**

The [Biennale of Sydney](https://www.biennaleofsydney.art/) was across a number
of venues including the [Art Gallery of New South Wales](https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/),
White Bay Power Station, Campbelltown Arts Centre and Penrith Regional Gallery.

Our first stop was the AGNSW, where not only did we enjoy a tour of the Biennale
here, but encountered the monumental ['The Keys Under the Mat'](https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/whats-on/exhibitions/mike-hewson/)
by Mike Hewson.

An incredible work in the tank, on for almost a year. Thanks to Justin Paton for
the intro. We also snuck a visit to Mike Hewson's studio as well.
We very much enjoyed
the Biennale theme this year, and it was made all the more relevant and relative
by Sue G.We really did feel like VIPs with the introductions and each location and
lunch with Biennale CEO Barb Moore. Already looking forward to 2028.

Glen is now a local [art tour guide on Tours by Locals](https://www.toursbylocals.com/tour-guides/new-zealand/auckland/guide-profile/glen-a-69629b8a1074a433a135a57d?tourId=6992349de805ff1ab3ca46e1).

Our tour in early April had a three generation Phillipino family enjoying an afternoon
in Auckland's sunshine before boarding their cruise.

We started with [Joe Sheehan's Lost and Found](https://www.aucklandpublicart.com/artworks/4210)
in Federal Street, then traveresed Aotea Square, Auckland Art Gallery, the streets
and lanes into Britomart. Learnt about Shane Cotton's Mural and discovered the [Pipi Beds](https://www.aucklandpublicart.com/search?artwork=3204)
fountains in Takutai Square.

We finished at Britomart Station on a beautiful afternoon.

Always a pleasure to share Auckland with visitors interested in learning about our
history through our art and culture.

![Durie Hill Elevator and tunnell](https://arttravel.co.nz/wp-content/uploads/2026/
03/Whanganui_2026_15.jpg "Whanganui_2026_15")

It was a very successful long weekend in Whanganui and New Plymouth for [Artist Open Studios](https://openstudios.co.nz/)
this year. The weekend began with a great Air Chathams experience before we lifted
off in another way - with a visit to the [Durie Hill Elevator.](https://www.duriehillelevator.co.nz/)

We found the food along the way to be excellent, the weather perfect, and our driver
Graham from Take it Easy Tours really got into the swing of things. He discovered
a whole new world of "arty" people in his home town he never knew existed.

The [Artist Open Studios](https://openstudios.co.nz/studios/) happen every year
across two weekends in March. Around Whanganui and its environs you can find around
80 artists and collectives to visit.

We usually visit a couple of artists not on the trail as well. This year we snuck
a visit in with the fabulous Andrea du Chatenier, spent time with James Kirkwood
and had a behind the scenes visit with Glen Hayward. We managed to seperate Emma
Camden from her headphones briefly for a chat as well.

You can never expect to visit all the studios, and we didn't try. But we did fit
in a range of things, including the Saturday morning Farmers Market, Rick Rudd's
Quartz Museum, as well as more than one visit to Drews Ave for a visit to local
watering holes Porridge Watson and Teal Lounge.

We spent time at [Te Whare o Rehua Sarjeant Gallery](https://sarjeant.org.nz/) with
the Director to learn about the history of the buildings - new and old. Such an
amazing extension both inside and out. The greater city layout of the building on
the axis directly facing toward Mt Ruapehu and back across Maria Place to Cooks
Gardens.
The building reflects the awa and the people of the area.Highlights included
an exhibition by recent [Tylee Cottage](https://sarjeant.org.nz/tylee-residency/)
resident Jade Townsend.

Tylee Cottage has and continues to play such an important part in bringing artists
to Whanganui. They come, enjoy the community, and many have stayed on and become
part of the fabric of the city.

Whanganui's architectural history comes to the fore, and has helped the city become
recognised as a [UNESCO City of Design.](https://cityofdesignwhanganui.nz/)

From Whanganui we travelled through Hawera to visit the new [Library and Gallery Centre](https://wam.studio/work/hawera?utm_campaign=linkinbio&utm_medium=referral&utm_source=later-linkinbio)
by Warren and Mahoney.

On to New Plymouth and a night in the city with an always amazing dinner at Social
Kitchen.
Our morning in among the art included a visit to the Govett Brewster Gallery,
St Josephs's church to see some quite amazing Michael Smither murals, and a stop
at St Mary's to visit the new building celebrating peace and reconciliation.
